On many occasions you may come across Spanish documentation provided by a client, a newly hired employee, a tenant or the other party with whom you sign a contract, and need to verify its authenticity.
Given the obvious and just limitations posed by Spanish and European privacy legislation such a check is impossible, unless it is believed that false personal details have been provided, and in this case the police or judicial bodies will be the only ones authorized to carry out such a check, following the receipt of a complaint. It is, however, possible to carry out a quick check that allows anyone to verify the authenticity of a blank sheet A4 NIE, or a “Certificado de no residente” –non-resident certificate – (The document often referred to, improperly, as a “White NIE”), in a matter of moments, thanks to a tool provided by the Policia Nacional that, until about two years ago, had never been available to the public.
Such a tool, moreover, is extremely useful not only for verifying the authenticity of a document, but also for obtaining a perfect (and valid) color PDF copy of it online, with the officials’ stamps and signatures identical to those on the paper original.
I will explain below how to perform such a check or how to obtain an online copy of a “Certificado de no residente,” or “Asignacion de NIE” sheet.
Surely you have noticed the presence of a QR code in the lower right-hand corner of the document, you can simply scan it with a QR code reader via your cell phone or enter it directly on the page https://sede.policia.gob.es/sede/pages/publico/verifica.xhtml?FA202405310912954 :

Once you open the Policía Nacional verification page you will have to do nothing more than copy exactly the verification code (Called “CSV code”) present on the left margin of the document:

You will need to enter this code exactly as it appears on the document, including special characters:

At this point the Policía Nacional’s platform will do a quick check in the Dirección General de la Policía’s database, and if the document turns out to be authentic, you will be able to download a perfect PDF copy:

Hi, I own a car rental company and a b&b in Tenerife, one of the many problems I have with people living in Spain (Which means, with a NIE) is to verify the authenticity of the documents, since in case of people coming from outside Spain it’s easier to see if they have a genuine passport, etc…, but sometimes locals (Well, foreigners living in Spain) just send me a national ID (In some cases difficult to read as in bad conditions) and a white NIE…My main concern is that this kind of NIE might be easy to fake….So, is this a legally-valid method to verify the docuemnt? many thanks
Dear kris, yes absolutely, the method above described is 100% legally accepted by any public or private entity in Spain and within the EU in order to verify the authenticity of non-resident certificate 8″Certificado de no residente»), KA «white NIE». kind regards,
